Very strong mag. 6.8 Earthquake - 18 km SE of Miyazaki, Japan, on Monday, Jan 13, 2025, at 09:19 pm (GMT +9) - 2 hours 17 minutes ago

A very strong magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred in the Philippine Sea near the coast of Miyazaki, Japan, in the evening of Monday, Jan 13, 2025 at 9.19 pm local time (GMT +9). The quake had a shallow depth of 36 km (22 mi) and was felt widely in the area. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.
No significant damage or impact is expected from this quake and no particular alert was issued.

Very strong magnitude 6.8 earthquake at 36 km depth

13 Jan 12:23 UTC: First to report: VolcanoDiscovery after 4 minutes.
13 Jan 12:26: Now using data updates from GFZ
13 Jan 12:28: Hypocenter depth recalculated from 10.0 to 68.0 km (from 6.2 to 42 mi). Epicenter location corrected by 4.5 km (2.8 mi) towards SSE.
13 Jan 12:28: Epicenter location corrected by 0.6 km (0.4 mi) towards SW.
13 Jan 12:32: Magnitude recalculated from 6.2 to 6.7. Hypocenter depth recalculated from 68.0 to 52.0 km (from 42 to 32 mi). Epicenter location corrected by 8.2 km (5.1 mi) towards WSW.
13 Jan 12:32: Now using data updates from USGS
13 Jan 12:38: Magnitude recalculated from 6.9 to 6.8. Hypocenter depth recalculated from 32.0 to 48.9 km (from 19.9 to 30 mi). Epicenter location corrected by 10.1 km (6.3 mi) towards NW.
13 Jan 13:26: Hypocenter depth recalculated from 48.9 to 36.0 km (from 30 to 22 mi). Epicenter location corrected by 7.4 km (4.6 mi) towards SE.

According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure.

Towns or cities where the quake likely caused strong ground shaking include

Moderate shaking probably occurred in Tsuma (pop. 34,300) located 22 km from the epicenter, Nichinan (pop. 44,200) 46 km away, Miyakonojō (pop. 131,000) 55 km away, and Kobayashi (pop. 39,700) 56 km away.

In Nobeoka (pop. 121,900) located 69 km from the epicenter, Kirishima (pop. 123,200) 81 km away, and Kanoya (pop. 82,300) 95 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
